AI Overviews Are Now Auto-Expanding into AI Mode: What This Means for Law Firm Search

Google is changing how some AI Overviews appear in search results, making the experience more immersive and pushing users further into AI Mode.

Previously, many AI Overviews appeared as a shortened response with a “Show more” option. Google is now testing and expanding an experience where the full AI response loads automatically, along with an “Ask anything” box that encourages users to continue their search through AI.

The change could have important implications for businesses that rely on organic search visibility.

What Changed?

With the previous AI Overview experience, users typically saw a condensed AI-generated answer near the top of the results. They could expand it if they wanted more information or continue scrolling to reach traditional organic listings.

With the newer experience, Google automatically expands the AI response when its systems determine that a deeper answer may be useful.

The “Ask anything” prompt also appears alongside the expanded response, giving users an immediate way to ask follow-up questions without returning to a traditional search results experience.

The expansion is not triggered for every search. Google has indicated that the experience is dynamic and depends on the query and Google’s assessment of what will be most useful.

Why This Matters for SEO

When an AI Overview takes up more space at the top of the page, traditional organic listings can be pushed farther down.

This is particularly relevant for informational searches where users are looking for explanations, comparisons, definitions, or answers to specific questions.

For businesses, ranking highly in traditional search results remains important, but it is increasingly only one part of the visibility equation. Being referenced or cited within Google’s AI-generated results can also influence how users discover a brand.

That makes content quality, topical authority, clear answers, and trustworthy sources increasingly important components of an SEO strategy.

How Businesses Should Respond

Businesses should not abandon traditional SEO because of AI Overviews. Instead, they should expand their approach.

Create Content That Directly Answers Questions

Content should get to the point quickly. Pages that provide clear, useful answers are easier for both users and search systems to understand. Businesses should also avoid padding articles with unnecessary information simply to increase word count and instead focus on answering the questions their audience actually searches.

Build Topic Authority

A single article is unlikely to establish strong visibility around an entire subject. Developing related content around important topics can help demonstrate expertise and create a stronger overall topical presence.

Strengthen Bottom-of-Funnel Pages

Informational searches may increasingly be answered directly within Google’s AI experience, but pages designed to generate leads still play an important role. Service pages, location pages, product pages, contact pages, and other conversion-focused content should remain a major part of an SEO strategy.

Monitor More Than Rankings

Traditional keyword rankings no longer tell the whole story. Businesses should monitor organic traffic, impressions, clicks, conversions, and other available search visibility data. Where AI search reporting is available, it should be reviewed alongside traditional SEO metrics.

The Search Experience Is Changing

Google’s expanding use of AI is changing how users interact with search results. The shift does not make traditional SEO irrelevant, but it does mean businesses need to think beyond simply ranking in the blue links.

The goal is to create content that is useful enough to earn visibility across Google’s evolving search experiences while continuing to guide users toward meaningful actions.
